Your baby this month

The world is coming alive for baby in the womb. He or she can often, by now, hear noises such as Mom or Dad talking or loud noises.

The skin is now transparent and thin with visible blood vessels just below the surface; because of this, the skin takes on a reddish color. Vernix has started to develop as well as lanugo a fine downy hair. These are in place to protect baby from becoming water logged.

Eye lashes, eye brows, and the hair on babies head is starting to fill in; though many babies will be born with very little hair at all.

At this point baby has acquired the skills of yawning, stretching, kicking, turning and wiggling all around. That’s amazing when you realize the little one you carry is 8 to 12 inches long and only ½ to 1 pound in weight!

What is happening with Mom?

This month you are showing a lot more! So don’t be surprised when you hear “When are you due?”

Now begins the stage for many woman of discomfort. Lower backaches, leg cramps and stretching of the ligaments in the uterus are common place and not normally a need for concern. By the end of this month many women’s belly buttons protrude.

Many women really start to feel pregnant this month and the reality of motherhood sets in. This is also the month you may start to feel the flutter of the baby moving or small gentle movements.

What is happening with Dad?

As you start to show, Dad may have concerns about becoming a father, as well as provider for the family. It is important as a couple to express your fears and anticipations.

What may happen at your doctor visits this month?

As they do at every appointment, your weight and blood pressure will be recorded as well as a urine sample to test for sugars and proteins. The height of your uterus will be measured and recorded as well to track how well baby is growing. This month you may have an ultra sound to check baby’s growth and confirm the babies’ position in the uterus. The radiologist may even be able to tell you the sex of your child.
