Pregnancy Month 3
Written and researched exclusively for Simplymoms.com by: Jen Kendall

Your baby this month

Your baby now weighs just over an ounce, is about 4 inches long and now has soft finger and toenails. Baby’s arms and legs are fully formed and the kidney’s have developed and are sending urine in to the bladder. By week 10, the eyes are largely open, but the eyelids are starting to fuse and will continue the process until about week 25-27. You’re probably feeling a lot more kicks from the little one, and baby may even react to your touch through the belly. By the end of week 12, all of baby’s organs are developed and will continue to mature through the rest of the pregnancy.

What’s happening with Mom

If you were unfortunate enough to have morning sickness, it will probably continue for another few weeks, but the end is near! You may still feel fatigue as well. Your clothes may start to feel a bit tight around the waist, and your breasts may start to become fuller, especially is this isn’t your first baby. Most women gain an average of 25-35 pounds during pregnancy, in your third month; you may have gained about 4 pounds now. Due to the higher levels of progesterone in your body now, you may have heartburn, indigestion, constipation and gas. You can always talk to your doctor about ways to help remedy these. Nasal congestion and nosebleeds are common in pregnancy as well, you can use a vaporizer or humidifier to help reduce these symptoms.

What’s happening with Dad

It might be a little frustrating for Dad right now, especially if Mom has severe morning sickness. Just remember, it will get better. The best thing is to help out as much as you can. There are most likely certain smells that make her feel sick, try to take note of these smells and keep them out of the house until the morning sickness is gone. Keep soda crackers close by, encourage her to eat some before she gets out of bed in the morning. Housework is probably the last thing on her mind, try to do what you can to keep the house tidy, she’ll definitely appreciate it! It might also be hard for Dad since he can’t see or feel the changes going on with Mom. It’s sometimes hard for a Dad to believe that there’s really a baby growing inside there. In a few weeks though, you’ll be able to feel those little kicks, and see Mom’s belly grow.

What may happen at this month’s doctor’s visit?

At this month’s visit your blood pressure and weight will be recorded. A urine test will also be done to check for sugar and protein. The height of your uterus will be checked to see how baby is growing. This is probably when you’ll be able to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time too! The heartbeat will be recorded at every visit from now on. If necessary, your doctor may talk to you about doing a chorionic villus sampling (CVS) test. This is usually done between weeks 8-12, and can determine genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in the baby.
