Your Baby at 1 month
By: Julie

Congratulations Mommy you made it through Nine months of pregnancy. Now the real fun starts!!

As you have probably noticed, your baby can do many things. He/She can cry, hear sounds, look around, slightly lift and turn their head, hold onto your finger, but most importantly He/She can suck. Your baby is also getting used to his/her routine. He/She eats anywhere from every 2-4 hours. And stays awake for longer time periods. He/She is also becoming more familiar with His/Her surroundings by recognizing faces and different sounds. Mom's voice is very soothing and comforting. This is the perfect time to introduce a favorite lullaby. Your baby should weigh 8-12 pounds and be anywhere from 20-24 inches long

1 Month Milestones

Both of your baby’s eyes are now able to focus on large objects. Slowly shake a rattle or bright toy in front of baby’s face and He/She should be able to follow it. Baby is also becoming more familiar with his/her arms and legs. By telling and touching baby’s arms and legs you will help him/her gain control and acknowledge that those body parts belong to him/her. Baby can now go a bit longer between feeding and is still comforted by sucking.

Games and Songs for Baby

When rocking baby to sleep at night, pick a song with a slow steady rhythm. One favorite rhyme is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The best tool for development at this age is guidance and sound. Sing songs about baby’s feet (This little piggy... pointing to and touching each toe.) Make up your own song with baby’s name including baby’s body parts while touching each one. Baby loves faces. While singing or talking to baby make eye contact with him/her.

Nutrition

At One Month baby needs to be eating every 2-4 hours. On a note pad jot down when baby eats and if possible the amount. Also make sure that baby has at the LEAST 8 wet and 2 poopie diapers per day. Changing baby’s diaper before he/she eat’s will help you remember how many soiled diapers baby has had. This is something you may also want to take note of.

*Keeping notes of baby’s eating and sleeping pattern will be a great resource to take to Dr visit should the Dr have any questions about baby’s patterns.

What to expect-One Month Check up

Your baby’s Pediatrician will want to know

  • how often baby is eating as well as the amount. (If you are Breast Feeding, how long baby eats. If you are Bottle Feeding, the amount baby eats)
  • How many wet and poopie diapers baby is going through.
  • How long baby is sleeping.
  • Whether or not baby reacts to sound and light.
  • How often baby cries and for how long.
  • Anything you may be concerned about or any questions you might have
  • If you have questions for the Doctor be sure to write them down so you will not forget them.
Safety Tips
  • Always lay baby on back to sleep
  • Do not leave large blankets or loose fitting clothes in crib with baby
  • Remove all toys and stuffed animals from crib
  • Securely tie bumper pads around bars on crib
  • Keep numbers to Poison Control, Police, Fire Department, and Pediatrician close to phone in case of an Emergency

Most importantly love and cherish these moments because they go fast!!
